Olivia’s latest work… her first oil painting…

Many of you have followed Olivia’s art work since she was four years old. We have been painting together steadily since Christmas when she got acrylic paints, brushes, and an easel as a gift. Here is her latest work… her first oil painting. I sketched out the scene for her, mixed the paints, she did the rest… honest!

Willy Lott’s Cottage… 3×6″ oil on panel, 4-2007, Olivia (age almost 6)

Here’s dad’s version:

“Willy Lott’s Cottage #2″… 6×12″ oil on panel, 4-2007.

Willy Lott’s Cottage #1″… 6×8″ oil on panel, 4-2007.

An interesting story behind these works:

Willy Lott’s cottage is not only a beautiful example of 17th century English architecture… it is a famous art artifact. Peacefully nestled at Flatford Mill in the Dedham Vale, Suffolk, England, it was made famous by master artist, John Constable, in several of his paintings… most notably in “The Haywain”. The setting today is as inspiring as it was in 1819 when Constable painted the scene that is considered one of the most famous of all English paintings.
Original… “The Haywain” by John Constable, 1819.

Impressionistic Country Cottages…

Recently I started a second job… the hours stink but the work is very rewarding… I started painting every week night. My goal is to do a small “Painting a Day” to market in different venues such as galleries and ebay. I say the hours stink because I start every night at 10:00 PM as not to cut into my family time. I’ll share these works with you on a regular basis. The pieces are orginal signed oil paintings usually in 5×7″, 6×8″, and 6×12″ formats. I  paint a variety of subjects… still lifes, seascapes, and landscapes (cottages being among my favorite themes)… mostly in an impressionistic style. Here are a couple of recent works.

“Cottage and Flowers”… 5×7″ Oil on Panel, December 2006.

“Cottage with Poppies”… 6×8″ Oil on Panel, December 2006.

You can blame the Monet Exhibit for my new found love of Impressionism…

Plein Fun….

Plein air fun that is…

Dylan, Olivia, and I went to the beach Sunday and had a great time. We visited Aunt June and Uncle Larry at their beach house where the kids played on the beach and I set up the easel to plein air paint.

Dylan dug a deep hole for fun… he’s pictured here with Livie (both) standing in it…

I met some neat people while painting and had many interesting conversations. Bob and Jenny from Virginia were kind enough to give the kids some sea shells they referred to as “Baby Ears”… sure enough… they looked just like baby ears. Needless to say the painting (although enjoyable to paint) didn’t turn out to my liking… a perfect example of a weak focal point… so I won’t share it here. I did set up a small still life with the shells Bob and Jenny gave the kids and painted one of my small postcard studies that I’ll share instead.

“Baby’s Ears”… 6″x8″ Oil on canvasboard, postcard study from life, October 2006.

Click here to see if this original oil painting is for sale…

Hope you enjoy…

“You Gotta Crack a Few Eggs”…

“A Good artist has less time than ideas…” ~ Martin Kippenberger

“Lord, grant that I may always desire more than I can accomplish…” ~ Michelangelo

It has been said that an oil painter must paint 500 paintings before he can claim to be a true painter… I’m crackin’ ‘em one at a time.

“You Gotta Crack a Few Eggs”… 5″x7″ Oil on panel, 1 hour “postcard” study from life, July 2006.

Generic Tums…

“You are looking only on the surface of things.”
2 Corinthians 10:7

Do you look and things or see them? Funny question huh? Think about it though… really think about it. How do you perceive things? Do you look beyond the surface? Click the question below for a simple test on how you perceive things…

These postcard paintings are exercises in artistic seeing for me.

Postcard painting #2…

“Generic Tums”… 5″x7″ Postcard Painting #2, Oil on Panel (1 1/2 hours), 2006.

Before the Eagle, Globe & Anchor…

Before the Eagle, Globe & Anchor (which was established in 1868) the United States Marine Corps used this insignia during the War Between the States (1861-1865).

Postcard painting #1…

“Before the Eagle, Globe & Anchor”… 5″x7″ Postcard Painting #1. Oil on Panel (one hour), 2006… Civil War USMC hat insignia.

I am beginning a series of postcard size (4″x6″ to 5″x7″) paintings that are strictly of incidental items that strike my fancy. I am painting them from life by simply setting up small still lifes. The majority of these paintings take about one to two hours to paint. These quick exercises enable me to develop a sharper eye for painting… it enables me to see vs look. I plan to share these with you from time to time throughout the winter. Nothing fancy… just fun and educational.

Thanks for looking!
